2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

A great week is to have a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer for a test drive. It was absolutely terrific, but this was no ordinary Lancer. This was a Sportback Ralliart model, complete with enough racing features to provide an exhilarating drive. There were a few downsides, however.

Mitsubishi has their Lancer EVO, which is fairly popular and performs well. This new Sportback model of the Lancer provides more versatility by combining a sporty car with the convenience of a five door wagon-like vehicle. There is even a rear cargo floor that can be dropped about three inches to provide additional cargo space if needed.

The Sportback is provided in two trim models - the GTS and the Ralliart. My test model was the Ralliart, which offers a lot more power, and All-Wheel-Drive. The GTS has Mitsubishi's 2.4 liter engine that is quite efficient and provides 168 horsepower. The Ralliart has a 2.0 liter, inline four cylinder, turbocharged engine that spits out 237 horsepower. There is only one transmission in the Ralliart and that is a six speed automatic Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift. That is the same automatic transmission in the Lancer Evolution.

The automatic feature is operated normally, but can be handled manually by the magnesium paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. I tried the paddle shifters quite often during my test drive and they work extremely well. I am just not inclined to use paddle shifters very often in any car and generally leave that driving mode to those who like to dream about being racecar drivers.

The exterior of the Lancer Ralliart is striking. It offers a swept back appearance that sometimes appears as a standard Mitsubishi look and other times as something new. My test model was called Wicked White. The interior was black. The interior is generally comfortable, except for the seating. There are a few silver accents and the fit and finish is well done. Most of the interior, however, is plastic, and mostly plain black. There are a lot of features that help make the driving experience pleasant.

Optional Recaro seats were added to my test drive model. These have extra side bolstering that help hold you in the seat on sharp corners or fast turns. I like the Recaro seats. The spec sheet said that the driver's seat was adjustable, but that only meant it moved back and forward. There was absolutely no way to raise the height of the seat. Although I may aspire to be a six-foot person, I have not arrived at that lofty height yet, so I must rely on the seat to raise me to where I can see over the dashboard. It was definitely a challenge. The steering wheel does not telescope, so I had to pull the seat as far forward as possible just to reach the pedals and steering. Once that was all done and the seat back positioned, it was a fairly decent ride. I wish there had been a center armrest to help out on a lengthy highway stretch.

If you are looking for a vehicle that will provide a very sporty ride with all the convenience of a hatchback, then the Lancer Sportback Ralliart might be just right for you. I really liked the advanced All-Wheel-Drive, especially during the inclement weather.

Starting price of the GTS is just $19,190,but the Ralliart version begins at $27,590. My test model had a bottom sticker price of $31,060, but it had a lot of added convenience features including a terrific Rockford Fosgate sound system. EPA mileage figures are 17-mpg city and 25-mpg highway.

All New 3.8L Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

The 2010 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder has been upgraded with exciting new engine options when compared to the previous generation. The 2010 Eclipse is the same as the 2006 model. However, there have been a few small updates to the vehicle. Most of the updates to the vehicle have been cosmetic, and have been either updates to the interior or small updates to the exterior.

The first engine that we will look at is the 3.8L V6. This engine option produces 265 horsepower and 230 ft lbs of torque. This engine has MIVEC technology embedded in it. MIVEC stands for Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system. This system allows the engine to control the lift and duration of the valves. This action allows more or less power to be transmitted to the engine based on engine speed. MIVEC has greatly increased the efficiency of Mitsubishi's engines since its introduction in 1992.

The next engine we will look at is the 2.4L four-cylinder engine. This engine produces around 163 horsepower and 122 ft lbs of torque. This engine is available in the base model Spyder, while the V6 offering is only available in high-end models. This engine also uses MIVEC technology to increase efficiency.

Both of these engines share many features of Mitsubishi's PS platform series. The 2010 Eclipse is only available in a FWD model, whereas previous generations have been available in AWD. However, Mitsubishi is currently working on a concept model of the 2010 Eclipse that uses a hybrid 4G63 engine and has updated body features. 2009 Mitsubishi Raider

The Mitsubishi Raider, a restyled version of the Dodge Dakota midsize pickup, ended production in 2009. For its final model year, it came only with a V6 engine; Mitsubishi dropped the optional V8 in 2007. The Raider's sole engine was a Chrysler-designed 3.7-liter V6. Known as EKG, this 12-valve, SOHC engine is part of Chrysler's PowerTech family. It is essentially a six-cylinder version of the 4.7-liter V8 used in various Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles.

Like the V8, it has a cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder heads, a plastic intake manifold, chain-driven overhead camshafts, and roller-type cam followers. The EKG shares the V8's 90-degree bank angle, rather than the 60-degree angle ideal for a V6 engine. It uses a split-pin crankshaft to give even firing intervals, and a balance shaft to reduce the shaking forces created by the 90-degree layout. The 3.7-liter engine was revised in 2005 with hydraulic valve lash adjusters, a new cam profile for better mid-range torque, and a higher, 9.7:1 compression ratio. In the Raider, it made 210 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque.

The 3.7-liter engine was sorely underpowered for the Raider's size and weight. It had adequate power for commuting, but freeway merging demanded caution, particularly with a heavy load. Its performance was dramatically inferior to rivals like the 236-horsepower Toyota Tacoma and 261-horsepower Nissan Frontier. The Raider was further hampered by its automatic transmission, which had only four speeds, compared to the five-speed automatics of most competitors.

Despite the V6's lack of grunt, the Raider's EPA fuel economy estimates were unimpressive, inferior to the more-powerful Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger, and no better than the far more muscular Nissan Frontier. In compensation, the Mitsubishi's 3.7-liter V6 was reasonably refined and very well muffled, making the Raider one of the quietest trucks in this class.

2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

The 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport compact sport-utility vehicle ("SUV") recently made its North American debut at the 2010 New York International Auto Show. The Outlander Sport has already been released overseas, where it is known as the Mitsubishi RVR in Asia and the Mitsubishi ASX ("Active Sport Crossover") in Europe.

The new Outlander Sport is a condensed version of the successful Mitsubishi Outlander SUV. The 5-seat Sport is 13.6 inches shorter and 440 pounds lighter than the Outlander. The regular Outlander has an available V-6 engine and 7-passenger seating. The streamlining of SUVs into more compact form is a popular automotive trend.

The Outlander Sport will come with a 2.0-liter, 148 horsepower, and 4-cylinder MIVEC engine. Its styling draws information from Mitsubishi's Lancer sport and is part of part of Mitsubishi's plan to reposition itself as a maker of smaller and more efficient cars. The vehicle is expected to get fuel economy above 30 miles per gallon on the highway and produce low emissions. To save weight, the Outlander Sport comes with recycled plastic front fenders and thinner high-strength steel in the tailgate, doors, and hood.

The Outlander Sport is expected to have a base price of under $20,000. A five-speed manual will come standard on the base ES model. A six-speed magnesium paddle-shifted Continuously Variable Transmission will be available on the ES model and standard on the SE model. The model will have available Mitsubishi's electronic all-wheel drive system. Other available options will include a navigation system with traffic updates, a 710-watt nine speaker sound system, and HID headlamps. This model will go on sale this fall in the United States.
