2010 Nissan GT-R

2010 Nissan GT-R
Nissan's high-performance GT-R returns for 2010 with 5 more horsepower for its twin-turbocharged V6.

The GT-R uses Nissan's 3.8-liter, all-aluminum VR38DETT engine. Although this 24-valve, DOHC V6 is loosely based on Nissan's familiar VQ engine, it has many advanced features, including a stiffer, closed-deck cylinder block; plasma-sprayed cylinder bores to reduce weight and friction; and an unusual wet/dry-sump oil system to ensure proper lubrication in high-g turns. Curiously, it does not use the sophisticated Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) system from the 370Z; it has variable valve timing on the intake cam only. Each engine is hand-built by a single technician in a special clean-room facility, to ensure precise assembly.

The 3.8-liter engine features two IHI turbochargers, each with its own air-to-air inter-cooler. The turbines themselves are made of stainless steel, to reduce mass and improve spool-up time. Each turbocharger feeds one cylinder bank, providing up to 10.2 pounds of boost. The turbochargers are integral to the exhaust manifolds, making turbo upgrades more difficult.

The GT-R's power output has controversial since its debut. In 2009, it was rated at 480 horsepower, which several reviewers discovered was significantly underrated. For 2010, Nissan rates the V6 at 485 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque, crediting the extra horsepower to unspecified engine refinements.

Whatever its actual output, the GT-R has ferocious acceleration, rivaling many sports cars that cost far more. Because it does not use variable-geometry turbochargers, however, there is some turbo lag, with power coming on strongest above 3,000 rpm. Despite its power, the V6 is reasonably civilized; some reviewers actually complain that it is too quiet, lacking sporty character.

The twin-turbo engine is inevitably thirsty, but its 16/21 EPA rating is no worse than the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and better than the less-powerful Dodge Challenger SRT8. Premium fuel is mandatory.

2010 Nissan Pathfinder Engine Options Include V6 and V8 Designs

2010 Nissan Pathfinder Engine Options Include V6 and V8 Designs
During the current model year, 2010 Nissan Pathfinder engine options include V6 and V8 designs. The V6 power plant is available on all models, while the V8 option is only available in models restricted to continuous four-wheel drive mode.

The legendary 4.0-liter V6 power plant from last year remains unchanged. The 24-valve cylinder head supports 266 hp while generating 288 ft-lb of torque. The air induction system utilizes variable-flow to optimize back pressure. Valve timing is controlled by a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS). Because of the complementary function of these proven features, 2010 Nissan Pathfinder engine options allow all owners to use either regular or premium gas.

The innovative design of the 4.0L power plant insures reliable and brisk performance. To increase power and reduce emissions, all 4.0L models include platinum-tipped spark plugs that reduce fouling and increase performance. An electronic drive-by-wire throttle linkage insures maximum acceleration remains available.

The 5.6-liter V8 option produces 310 hp while generating 388 ft-lb of torque. Four vales per cylinder are synchronized by double-overhead camshafts. In addition, the V8 also increases performance and reduces emissions using a variable intake system, CVTCS and premium spark plugs.

The 2WD-4WD model and the full-time 4WD model are both available with two different transmissions. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard. Owners may alternatively choose a 5-speed automatic transmission that includes a manual operation mode.

The 2010 Pathfinder incorporates few obvious exterior updates. The distinctive styling characteristics of this SUV remain the same. Rear-door handles are mounted higher than front-door handles in a vertical position. According to the factory, this limits access by small children.

The familiar exterior profile is rugged yet practical. Most shoppers believe the Pathfinder is sufficiently stylish without requiring a complete cosmetic overhaul. Nevertheless, rumors abound regarding future changes despite sustained popularity.

2010 Nissan Murano

2010 Nissan Murano
The Nissan Murano, Nissan's mid-size crossover SUV, returns for 2010 with no engine changes, following a 2009 redesign.

The Murano's only engine is a 3.5-liter DOHC V6. This 24-valve, all-aluminum engine, known as the VQ35DE, is a version of the award-winning V6 used in the Altima and Maxima sedans. It features micro-finished camshaft and crankshaft journals for reduced internal friction; a resin-cast intake manifold with a Variable Intake System (VIS) to optimize engine breathing at all engine speeds; Nissan Direct Ignition System; and continuously variable timing for the intake valves.

Last year's engine revisions increased the Murano's output to 265 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, up from 245 horsepower and 246 lb-ft in earlier years. The Murano's engine is less powerful than the version of the VQ35DE used in the 2010 Maxima, which has 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque. The engine in the Murano has been tuned for stronger mid-range power, to compensate for the crossover's greater weight.

The Murano's 265-horsepower V6 is more powerful than the rival Honda Pilot, but falls short of the 273-horsepower Mazda CX-9 and the 288-horsepower GMC Acadia. Nevertheless, the Murano's performance is among the best in its class, thanks in part to the Xtronic continuously variable transmission, which keeps the engine in the meatiest part of its powerband for swift acceleration and passing.

The 3.5-liter engine's muscle does not come at the expense of good manners. Reviewers say it is always smooth, and engine noise is unobtrusive. It is also one of the most fuel-efficient engines in this class. EPA estimated fuel economy is 18/23 for both FWD and AWD Muranos, better than the Acadia or Pilot, and much better than the thirsty AWD CX-9, which rates only 15/21. However, Nissan recommends premium fuel, while key rivals use cheaper regular gas.

2010 Nissan Sentra

2010 Nissan Sentra
The all new 2010 Nissan Sentra base model comes fully equipped with a 2.0 liter engine. This model engine is excellent for the driver who spends a great deal of time on the road daily. This engine features one of the best EPA ratings available on most new car models with a standard gasoline engine.

The new 2010 Nissan automobile's 2.0 liter engine produces 140 horsepower and 147 pounds per feet of torque. It has an EPA rating of 24 miles per gallon of gasoline during city driving conditions and 34 miles per gallon of gasoline during highway driving conditions. When driving in combination of city and highway conditions, this vehicle still has high ratings with an astounding 31 miles per gallon of gasoline. This model engine operates on regular grade unleaded fuel without the hassle of additives.

The 2.0 liter engine also features four inline cylinders that are equipped with 4 valves per cylinder and have a compression ratio of 9.7 to 1. This model engine has a dual overhead cam. The featured variable valve timing control system on the automobile's 2.0 engine operates continuously. The new 2010 automobile;s2.0 liter inline 4 engine also features a multi point fuel injection system.

Toyota equips the 2010 Nissan Sentra 2.0 engine with Iridium tipped spark plugs. Iridium tipped spark plugs when compared to the traditional platinum tipped spark plugs proved to be six times harder and eight times stronger. These spark plugs are capable of lasting up to 120,000 miles.

2010 Nissan Titan

2010 Nissan Titan
2010 Nissan Titan is a fine example of the full-size truck market. Often a vehicle this size performs best with a V8 or better, which is why Nissan equipped the Titan with a 5.6L V8 engine. So, expect a responsive engine that still keeps the fuel economy at a reasonable average.

With a 98.0 mm bore, a 92.0 mm stroke, and a 9.8:1 compression ratio, the 5.6L V8 in the 2010 Nissan Titan has the capacity to tow, haul and venture off road. A peak output of 317 horsepower occurs at 5200 rpm, while the maximum torque of 385 lb-ft is attained at 3400 rpm. Double overhead cams control each of the four valves dedicated per cylinder. Variable valve timing adjusts a total of 32 valves to optimize the intake and exhaust to the ever-changing demands of the driver.

Multi-port injection, and the Nissan direct ignition system contribute to a robust engine with respectable gas mileage. Equipped with the 5.6L V8 the 2010 Nissan Titan can average as high as 15 mpg for the RWD models. The 4WD models can maintain an average of up to 14 mpg. And, depending upon regional availability, Nissan's Flexible Fuel Vehicle Technology will permit the engine to run off of 87 octane gasoline or E85.

Rounding out these specs and features, the 5.6L V8 comes with platinum-tipped spark plugs for a better spark and greater plug life. A standard 650 CCA battery, with 710 CCA available on some models, provides ample current to start the engine in cold weather, while a 130 amp alternator recharges this battery and provides plenty of power for the on board electrical systems. And lastly, with an engine this powerful, Nissan's 5.6L V8 still manages to remain Tier 2 Emissions compliant.

2010 Nissan Rogue

2010 Nissan Rogue
Nissan's compact SUV returns for 2010 with no changes to its standard four-cylinder engine.

The Rogue's only engine is the 16-valve, 2.5-liter QR25DE, shared with the Sentra and Altima sedans. This all-aluminum inline four is an open-deck engine, designed for compactness and light weight. It has chain-driven dual overhead cams; continuously variable timing for the intake valves; Nissan's Direct Ignition System; and twin balance shafts to reduce vibration. In the Rogue, it is rated at 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the QR25DE's variable valve timing and long-stroke design, which are supposed to enhance low-end torque, most reviewers find this engine annoyingly weak at low speeds. Unlike some other four-cylinder SUVs, which provide good off-the-line grunt, but run out of breath at high revs, the Rogue's 2.5-liter engine provides anemic mid-range response, coming on strongly at higher speeds.

The 2.5-liter engine's 170 horsepower is at the low end for this class. The four-cylinder Toyota RAV4 has 179 horsepower, the Honda CR-V 180 horsepower, and the Chevrolet Equinox 182 horsepower; several rivals also offer V6 engines. The Rogue's performance is not dramatically inferior to its four-cylinder competition, but reviewers wish for more power for safer merging and passing.

The Rogue's standard Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) does not help much. While this transmission works well with Nissan's larger V6s, many critics say it only emphasizes the 2.5-liter engine's lack of power and raucous demeanor. The big four is reasonably quiet when cruising, but it becomes obnoxiously noisy in even moderate acceleration.

The EPA estimates the 2.5-liter's fuel economy at 22/27 for FWD Rogues, 21/26 with AWD. Both are average for this class, comparable to the Honda CR-V and four-cylinder RAV4, but well behind the 22/32 rating of the FWD Chevrolet Equinox. Like most rivals, the Rogue uses regular fuel.

2010 Nissan Altima Sedan

2010 Nissan Altima Sedan
If you haven't paid attention to the Altima since Bill Clinton was president, know it's grown from a compact economy car into a powerful, confident-handling, mid-size, entry-level luxury sedan that maintains Nissan's sporty flavor and, especially for 2010, offers assertive styling.

The four-door Altima Sedan comes as the 2.5 CVT, 2.5 S and 3.5 SR CVT. Also, under the Altima umbrella is the Altima Coupe and Altima Hybrid sedan. (We'll leave the coupe and hybrid sedan for future reviews.) Here's how to decode Nissan's model nomenclature. The "2.5" indicates the car is fitted with a very strong 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder. The "3.5" means it enjoys the awesome 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine. All Altimas are fitted with a "CVT," which stands for "continuously variable transmission." More on CVTs later. Prices start around $20,000 and go to almost $30,000 for the gas-engine cars.

If you're looking for an affordable, very roomy sedan, consider the 2.5 CVT. If you're willing to pay a bit more for Nissan's sporty feel, the 2.5 S CVT is an excellent choice. Those who like to go BMW hunting in the stoplight Grand Prix or on a curvy back road will be very entertained by the 270-horsepower 3.5 SR CVT.

Changes for 2010 feature a more assertive hood, grille and front bumper cover. Inside, the Altima received new fabrics. Electronic stability control, which Nissan calls VDC, now comes on all Altimas, but that's not too newsy as it will soon be government-required on all passenger vehicles. The 3.5 SR CVT (formerly called the SE) now comes with high-intensity discharge headlights.

Rather than physically changing gears like a conventional automatic, a CVT uses a belt and pulley system. It's designed to keep the engine at its most-efficient speed for the task required, regardless of whether that's optimum fuel mileage during highway cruising or maximum acceleration for merging into traffic. Few drivers will notice a difference between a CVT and a regular automatic, except for improved fuel economy and strong acceleration. Gear-heads: The Altima's CVT also employs a small gear set to increase its effective ratio range. Don't take this too hard, gearheads, but the CVT does a far better job of maximizing the engine's performance than you could with a manual transmission.

The four-cylinder delivers 23 miles per gallon in the government's city driving test and a very impressive 32 mpg on the highway. The V6 is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. Altimas are made in Tennessee and Mississippi.

The 2010 Altima received "Good" crash safety ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in both front offset and side impact tests. In the government's crash test studies, the Altima Sedan scored high marks—five stars—in both driver and passenger frontal impacts, as well as side driver impacts, and four out of five stars in the rollover category and side rear passenger impact test.

If you're thinking about ditching the SUV for a spacious and sporty sedan, think about the 2010 Altima.

Micra might come with a 1.2L, 1240cc petrol engine and a 1.4L, 1386cc petrol engine capable of generating 80PS at 5200rpm with 110Nm of maximum torque at 3600rpm and 88PS power at 5200rpm with maximum torque of 128Nm at 3200rpm. While the 1.5L, 1461cc diesel engine would be capable of generating 86PS power at 3750rpm with maximum torque of 200Nm at 1900rpm.

Nissan is expected to price Micra between Rs 3.5 to 5 lakh. The car is a far cry from the no-frill stripped down hatchbacks popular in India. Micra would come equipped with features common to sedans. Its stylish dual tone interiors with dual tone dashboard and advanced instrument panel make the inside of the car seem luxurious and up market. The dual front airbags, ABS (Antilock Brake System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-Force Distribution) and anti-skid system make up for the car's safety gear.

Nissan Micra's 1.2L, 1240cc petrol engine with MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) fuel injection system and manual transmission gearbox is expected to offer 13.5kmpl mileage in the city and 18.6kmpl mileage on the highway. The other variant with a similar engine but automatic transmission gearbox is expected to offer 12kmpl mileage in the city and 16.5kmpl mileage on the highway. The 1.4L, 1386cc petrol engine with MPFI fuel injection system and five speed manual transmission gearbox might give around 12.6kmpl in the city and 17.5kmpl on highway. The variant with an automatic transmission gearbox offers 11.5kmpl in the city and 16.5kmpl on highways. Whereas, 1.5L, 1461cc CRDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) diesel engine with five speed manual transmission gearbox offers abut 16.2kmpl in city and 20.7kmpl mileage on highway.

Nissan Micra has been designed keeping India in mind. The car has stylish looks, headlamps and fog lamps next to its front grille. Body colored bumpers, body-colored door mirrors, alloy wheels, silver finish door handles, tinted front headlamp covers et al are some of the design elements of the car that make it look good. Features like power windows, power steering, leather covered gear knob, leather upholstery, digital clock, tachometer, front and rear door pockets, front and rear cup holders provide that much needed comfort to the car.

With all of the above packed in the compact car the Nissan Micra is all set to set a new benchmark for hatchback makers in the Indian market.

2010 Nissan Maxima

2010 Nissan Maxima
Fuel efficiency in the 2010 Nissan Maxima is average for a vehicle with 6-cylinder engine. It is rated at 19 mpg for the city and 26 mpg for the highway. The Maxima comes standard with a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine, which is powerful in comparison to its competitors. There is no option for a 4-cylinder engine or a manual transmission, both of which are commonly thought to get better gas mileage.

For fuel efficiency, the Maxima comes with a CVT (continuously variable transmission) rather than a traditional automatic transmission with a set amount of gears. An uncommon 3-speed, or more common 4 or 5-speed transmission, shifts through its gears by raising RPMs, thus reducing gas mileage. The CVT is based on a pulley system for even ratio adjustment and is lighter than the conventionally geared transmission. A lighter vehicle is more fuel efficient simply because there is not as much weight to carry.

The CVT improves fuel economy by 9-11% on average as compared to a non CVT version. It is common to see manual transmission vehicles and those equipped with the CVT to equal out in gas mileage ratings. Additionally, the Nissan Maxima is a FWD (front wheel drive) vehicle which gets betting gas mileage than a vehicle or truck with 4X4 or AWD (all wheel drive). Both 4X4 and AWD options (not available on the Maxima) use all four wheels at the same time at least periodically, resulting in a need for more engine output to power them.
